THE CHRISTMAS TAPES
Previously only known to a select few within the music industry, these mythical recordings are gradually being released to the general public.
It may be that the referenced artists drew some inspiration from these songs for their own works. Or, indeed, it is possible that these songs are actually taken from various studio sessions by the artists in question.
Obviously, you can make up your own mind…
A Christmas Wish on the Dark Side of the Wall – Pink Floyd
Released in December 2023. Possibly recorded in their mid-late 70’s heyday, the final lost Christmas classic to be discovered (so far) sees the revered art rockers in a typically portentous mood for the festive season.
Christmas Party Megamix – The Smiths
Released in December 2017. Recording date could well be in the early 1980s as the songs appear as though they might well have inspired some of the Manchester legends’ recordings.
Frosty the Snowman – Coldplay and Pulp
Released in December 2016. Recording date unknown, though the style is very reminiscent of the mid-late 1990s – especially the juddery editing…
Excerpt from a Christmas Panto – U2
Released in December 2015. Thought to have been discovered in a derelict Dublin recording studio, having been recorded some time in the 1980s.
Jingle Bells – David Bowie and Lou Reed
Released December 2014. May have been recorded during one of the legendary studio sessions featuring these 2 musical giants in the 1970s. (Though if so, it was probably after the Christmas party, as they certainly sound a little bit ‘worse for wear’ compared to normal).
